Beginning Blends sorting is great for reviewing, practicing, and assessing your student’s letter blend knowledge. These beginning blends sorting mats will help students gain confidence in identifying beginning blends. Perfect for beginning readers!

A recording sheet and answer key.

SKILLS/STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

Students will blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words. Students will also orally produce one-syllable and two-syllable words by blending sounds, including consonant blends, and know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant blends or clusters.

WAYS TO PLAY:

BEGINNING BLENDS MATCHING:

1. Child chooses a beginning blends monster card and identifies the beginning blend.

2.. Then, they record the beginning blend letters on the recording sheet.

3. Child can build the beginning blend on the monster mat.

FEED THE MONSTER:

1. Child chooses a beginning blend monster card and identifies the beginning blend.

2. They place the beginning blend card on the correct Monster Blend Mat.

(I laminate these mats or place them in a plastic sleeve)

3. Opt. cut out the mouth of the Monsters and feed them the cards!

BEGINNING BLENDS MEMORY GAME:

1. Place the beginning blend image cards and the beginning blend letter cards upside down.

2. Children will take turns flipping over cards and matching the beginning blend image card to the beginning blend letters card.

The image key provides the names of each picture.

This resource can be used as centers, small groups, intervention, substitutes, homeschool, or as homework.
