This fun Monster syllable sorting activity is great for reviewing, practicing, and assessing your student’s knowledge of syllables. These syllable sorting mats will help students gain confidence in identifying how many syllables each word has. Perfect for beginning readers!

SKILLS/STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
Students will orally identify 1, 2, and 3 syllable words. They will decode 2 and 3 syllable words and sort 1, 2, and 3 syllable words.
WAYS TO PLAY:
SYLLABLE SORTING:
1. Child chooses a monster card and says the name of the image the monster is eating.
2.. Next, they say the word, breaking it into syllables.
3. Then, the child records the number of syllables on the recording sheet and places the monster card on the correct monster mat.
FEED THE MONSTER:
1. Child chooses a monster card and says the name of the image the monster is eating.
2. Next, they say the word, breaking it into syllables.
3. Then, the child feeds the monster card to the correct Monster.
(I laminate these mats or place them in a plastic sleeve)
4. Opt. cut out the mouth of the Monsters and feed them the cards!
The image key provides the names of each picture.
This resource can be used as centers, small groups, intervention, substitutes, homeschool, or as homework.
