This lesson, “What We Do When We Read,” is the first part of the unit “Creating Independent Readers in Your Middle School Classroom.” This unit provides a comprehensive plan for setting up a successful independent reading program in the classroom by teaching students metacognitive thinking while they read. The three parts of this lesson plan include objectives, learning targets, standards, a detailed lesson plan, and handouts. Students start by taking a reading survey to reflect on their reading habits, followed by a T-chart and writing about their reading experiences. Next, they read Thomas Lux’s poem “The Voice You Hear When You Read Silently,” identify the reading strategies used to understand the poem, discuss the author’s message, and do a quick write about what they do when they read.
